Dolphin Days: The Life and Times of the Spinner Dolphin
Published in Hardcover by W.W. Norton & Company (October, 1991)
Author: Kenneth S. Norris
Average review score:

a great book
Dolphin Days is a great book about a guy who researched dolphins. It explains their behavior and scientifics without getting boring. I highly recommend it!

A thinking-person's book about dolphins
As a graduate student in Hawaii, I was fortunate enough to have encounters with dolphins on several snorkle outings. It is certainly a special experience, but stop reading here if you think I am about to launch into a new-age rant about "...how dolphins are helping humans to evolve"!

Norris presents an accessible description about dolphin behavior and the science involved in that study. Although I have a science background, I know little biology, and yet Norris clearly presents this work in terms I could understand, and that any thinking person will be comfortable with. I have since purchased other books by Norris on dolphins, and schedule snorkle trips everytime I visit the Islands. If you have seen the latest IMAX movie "Dolphins" (dedicated to Norris), now is the time to read the book!

Enchanting and Educational!
I was enchanted and educated by the adventures of this fascinating family.
As a member of a later generation that did not personally experience the depression, I feel I now have an understanding of what life would have been like if I had. I thoroughly enjoyed the unique way the two sisters took turn telling the story, sometimes-different take on the same event! Wonderful!

A More Simple Time
This is a wonderful book. It is very well written and a fast read. I was left wanting to know more. What happened to Aunt Irene & Uncle Grant as they aged? Who did sleep in Giovanni's room? It provides a full portrait of a particular middle class family from 1935 to 1937 as they moved from town to town in the San Joaquin Valley of California to follow their father's work. I loved the clarity of the portrayal of this less complicated culture. One passage sent chills down my spine because of the contrast it draws to our present experience: "In 1935 most children didn't have closets stuffed with clothes, shoes and games." I especially enjoyed all the details of life - food, clothing, styles, manners. The characters were well drawn & varied & left me with a deep longing for a sister of my own.

Dr. Mandell's 5 Day Allergy Relief System
Over 10 years ago this book changed my life. It helped me to ferret out several food allergies that were not easy to find through traditional approaches. The book explains how we can develope allergies to many common foods, and that these allergies can produce symptoms that mock various diseases and maladies, both physical and mental. Additionally, the book gives detailed options as to how to test for food allergies, and how to structure your diet to avoid the offending foods. I occasionally refer to it even years later. Recommended related title:

Dr. Mandell's Allergy-Free Cookbook, Fran Gare Mandell, M.S.; Pocket Books, New York,1981

Foods/chemicals can cause physical/mental reactions.
This book shows how hidden food allergies and chemical sensitivities can cause such behavior as: rage, fear, lack of concentration, hyper-activity etc. and physical reactions, too numerous to mention. If the reader wants to try the diet it needs to be attempted with the appropriate professional person.

Dream Days
Published in Hardcover by Ten Speed Press (May, 1993)
Authors: Kenneth Grahame and Maxfield Parrish
Average review score:

A rare gem indeed
If you are picking up this book, you most likely have read its companion, THE GOLDEN AGE. This book continues the exploits of the children introduced in the first volume. Veddy, veddy English. Completely delightful, though.

I am not sure today's children would enjoy this book. The 19th Century British-isms will probably be quite tedious to any but the most precocious of children. And nothing really "happens" so to speak. No adventures of overwhelming magnitude. Rather, the children's imagination governs what happens throughout the book. Small things are turned into events of great importance. Children brought up with video games will most likely be bored. But for an adult, ahhh! This is a find. It will make you yearn for the idyllic childhood you never had or anybody had for that matter.

Each chapter is like sunlight shining on a bead of dew in April. Or something similarily poetic. Grahame's the better writer anyway.

Recalls the past
I'm sorry to see that Grahame's "Dream Days" is so unavailable. It's a deeply enjoyable book that demonstrates the power of "stories" to pull us out of the here and now and make us to stand up straighter, to imagine ourselves as knights and ladies. Grahame's book would be great for older children (young ones may find themselves fidgeting - there is a certain amount of description and archaic language). Adults may actually enjoy this one more than kids. Reading it brought back to me the days of my youth, when a good story could fire my imagination for days, and the characters lived right along side of me, as sort of doppelgangers. This story reminds me of E. Nesbit, another great Edwardian children's writer. Children should read these books, they are well-written and can help foster a love for the "right word" and the well-turned phrase. Try to find a copy with Parrish's illustrations. This whole book is just a wonderful aesthetic experience.

Simply fantastic
I found this book to be absolutely wonderful. As well as giving an insight and background to the goings on around the time of the Irish potato famine, it also transported me to a village I only had a picture of in my head. Through reading the book, I felt I was in the village and personally knew the charachters. I often cried and rejoiced with them. It was so sad to leave them when I had finished the book, but it wasn't long till I went back and read it again. Elaine Crowley has a fantastic gift of making you feel a part of her book.

Interesting, has great impact
Anyone who has any interest at all in the potato famine,or Ireland should read this book. It tells the story of Katie and Jamsie, and allows the reader to understand the pain and suffering of this time.

Dropzone Normandy : the story of the American and British airborne assault on D Day 1944

Allied airborne forces in Normandy
This is one of the few books which also takes a closer look at the British Airborne landings in Normandy. Besides that the book gives you a complete view on the entire operation. The book starts with covering how the British and American Airborne Forces were raised. It then goes on with how they prepared for D-Day. Next in line are the operations on D-Day itself. The last part of the book is about the operation of the Airborne Forces in Normandy after D-Day. One of the best things about this book is that it is written by someone who was there himself. Mr. Crookenden was an officer in the 6th Airborne Division during the Normandy assault.

It Worked!
My daughter is going on 3. She had become uninterested in using the potty. She was back in diapers when I got the book, and I just gave it to her. She was surprised and proud and it worked! We took it with us on bathroom visits and she didn't want diapers anymore.

Fun, fun, fun!
There are hilarious songs, great ideas for rewards, and a variety of activities to help you get your child engaged in toilet training. A great gift for parents!

Dry Days, Wet Nights

great for teaching kids
this book is a great example of a real live experience. alot of kids felt the same as LB, that he/she feels like a baby wearing a diper to bed. so they try and try and try not to wet the bed and after well you get the picture. this book is great for kids that have that problem.

A Healing Salve
What I have to say is complex, yet simple. I was a bedwetter who had tried everything, my parents tried the best they could to help. I wet the bed until I was sixteen years old. I was unable to do sleepovers like other children. At sixteen and deeply emotionally scarred I stopped wetting and was still hurting from the years of embarrasment. At the age of 20 I was volunteering in a library and shelved this book. I read it at that time and I was somehow healed of my wounds. I have searched for it since in every book store and now I have found it, thank God for Amazon.com. I cannot wait for the oppurtunity to share this treasure with my children.

Dylan's Day Out

Colorful romp through a dog's inner life
This entertaining story is a delight for kids, adults, or anyone who is compelled to live with and (despite themselves) love a dalmatian. Sparsely worded and heavy on illustration, Dylan's Day Out -- appropriately -- leaves much to the imagination. The title dog's color scheme carries over into the book's other inhabitants -- penguins, skunks, nuns, dominos, soccer balls, and other checkered items abound. The clever interplay between color and black-and-white engages children's imaginations and adds an extra level of entertainment and interaction for readers. My son's long outgrown it, but I still love looking at this book.

creatively thought-provoking---for young children
The author's sparse use of words and cleverly thought-out illustrations allow children (and their parents) to become creative storytellers!

Each New Day
Corrie ten Boom is timeless. We all need someone to look up to and Corrie is a wonderful mentor and inspiration to Christians everywhere. I have read this book several times and have purchased it for gifts as well. The reader will refer to it again and again and receive many blessings and great direction. Corrie always seems to touch on whatever is troubling you. You will not be disappointed. The Hiding Place which is the story of her life is also a wonderful book.

Each New Day Gets Better and Better
This book is very encouraging and uplifting! It gives one so much direction on how to live the life of a Christian, day to day. There are 365 devotions, as well as a short passage from Corrie, with relevant scriptures to match, and Corrie's prayer for the reader. There are so many examples Corrie uses from personal experience and each one of Corrie's books remain so anointed! There is a wealth of information in this book that brings us Corrie's lifetime of lessons. I hope this book will bring you the joy Corrie intended you to have, in the Lord Jesus Christ.
